Claude Pro vs Max: limits and price compared (2026)

Source: claude.com/pricing · figures checked 2026-06-13 · prices in USD

Claude sells two main paid consumer tiers: Pro and Max. The short version: Pro is the entry paid plan, and Max is the same Claude with substantially higher usage and priority. The longer version is more interesting, because of what Anthropic does not tell you. Every limit on these plans is stated as a multiplier ("more", "5x", "20x") of a base allowance whose absolute size is never published. This page lays out exactly what is stated, quoted word-for-word, with the date we checked it.

Side by side

PlanPriceUsage limit (as stated by Anthropic)
Free$0"Usage limits apply (unspecified)"
Pro$17/mo annual
($20 monthly)
"More usage than Free (multiplier unspecified)" · includes Claude Code and Claude Cowork
Max (5x)from $100/mo"Choose 5x or 20x more usage than Pro" · higher output limits · priority access at high-traffic times
Max (20x)above $100/moSame as above at the 20x multiplier

Pro annual is $200 billed up front, which works out to ~$17/mo; month-to-month is $20. Max is sold "from $100/mo" — the $100 entry buys the 5x tier, and the 20x tier costs more.

What "5x" and "20x" actually mean

This is the part worth slowing down on. Anthropic does not publish a number of messages or tokens for any of these plans. Pro is "more than Free." Max is "5x or 20x more than Pro." So the headline number — 20x — is a multiple of Pro, and Pro is a multiple of Free, and Free is "unspecified." None of the three is an absolute figure.

A multiplier of an unstated base is a number the vendor can change for every tier at once, silently, without editing a single price. We are not alleging Anthropic does this. We are pointing out that the structure allows it, which is exactly why a dated, verbatim record of the wording is worth keeping.

Which should you pick?

Pro is the right default for individual use: it unlocks Claude Code and Cowork and lifts the Free limits, at $17–$20/mo. You move to Max when you hit Pro's ceiling often enough that waiting is costing you real time — Max's 5x tier is the gentler step; 20x is for heavy daily, multi-hour use. Because the limits are relative rather than numeric, the honest advice is to start on Pro, watch how often you're throttled, and step up only when you actually feel the wall. There is no published number that lets you calculate this in advance.

These figures are kept current automatically. QuotaLedger snapshots Anthropic's pricing page every day, preserves the wording verbatim, and logs any change with a timestamp — so this comparison does not quietly go stale the way most "X vs Y" posts do. See the full ledger →
