What "5x" and "20x" actually mean
This is the part worth slowing down on. Anthropic does not publish a number of messages or tokens for any of these plans. Pro is "more than Free." Max is "5x or 20x more than Pro." So the headline number — 20x — is a multiple of Pro, and Pro is a multiple of Free, and Free is "unspecified." None of the three is an absolute figure.
Which should you pick?
Pro is the right default for individual use: it unlocks Claude Code and Cowork and lifts the Free limits, at $17–$20/mo.
